What Happens to Your Tapes at Our Facility
A behind-the-scenes look at our digitization process — from the moment your box arrives to the final quality check before your files are delivered.
From Your Doorstep to Digital: The Full Journey
We know it takes trust to send your irreplaceable memories to someone else. Here's exactly what happens at every step.
Step 1: Arrival & Intake (Day 1)
Your box arrives at our climate-controlled facility via FedEx. Within hours, a technician opens it and inspects every item. Each tape is assigned a unique barcode — the same tracking technology used by hospitals and pharmaceutical companies.
We photograph the exterior of each cassette and log any labels or writing. This becomes part of your permanent project record.
Step 2: Inspection & Preparation (Day 1-2)
Before any tape touches a playback machine, we inspect it:
- Visual check for mold, oxide shedding, or physical damage
- Housing integrity — cracked cases, broken tabs, jammed reels
- Tape tension test — we ensure the tape winds smoothly
If a tape has sticky-shed syndrome, we gently bake it at a controlled temperature to temporarily restore the binder. This gives us a window to capture the content before the tape becomes unplayable again.
Step 3: Signal Extraction (Day 2-4)
This is where the magic happens. Each tape is loaded into a broadcast-grade playback deck — the same machines used by television networks. We don't use consumer VCRs.
For analog formats (VHS, Betamax, Hi8), we use S-Video connections to extract the cleanest possible signal. For digital formats (MiniDV, Digital8), we perform a direct FireWire data transfer for a bit-perfect copy.
The raw capture is encoded into a ProRes 422 master file — a format used in Hollywood post-production.
Step 4: AI Enhancement (Day 3-5)
Your ProRes master is processed through our neural network pipeline:
1. De-interlacing: Removes the "comb" artifacts from old CRT-era recordings
2. Noise reduction: Cleans up tape hiss, snow, and color noise
3. Color correction: Restores faded colors to natural tones
4. Upscaling: Intelligently upscales to your chosen resolution (1080p or 4K)
This process runs frame-by-frame. A single 2-hour tape generates over 200,000 frames, each one individually processed.
Step 5: Quality Check (Day 4-6)
A human reviewer watches sections of every completed file:
- Spot-check for artifacts, glitches, or sync issues
- Compare beginning, middle, and end against the source
- Verify audio sync and levels
- Confirm the correct resolution and format
If anything doesn't meet our standards, the tape goes back through the pipeline.
Step 6: Delivery (Day 5-7)
Your files are uploaded to a secure, encrypted cloud link — unique to your order. You'll receive an email and text notification with download instructions.
If you ordered a USB drive, your files are loaded onto a custom-branded drive and shipped back along with your original tapes.
Your Originals Come Home
We always return your original tapes. They arrive in the same (or better) condition than when we received them, carefully packed in our crush-proof shipping box with a prepaid label.
The entire process typically takes 5-7 business days from when your tapes arrive. Rush processing is available if you need your memories back sooner.
Bring your memories back to life.
